In short: In 2009, Sega conceived a project to satisfy nostalgic fans craving classic 16-bit gameplay. But it wasn't meant to be a mainline sequel—it was originally planned as a mobile spin-off called "Sonic the Portable." A series of corporate shifts and fan reactions transformed a niche app into a multiplatform release.

Development on what would become Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I began in May 2009. Led by Dimps with assistance from Sonic Team, the project was initially intended as a smartphone-exclusive title designed to utilize gyroscope functions. However, Sega's American branch pushed for a multiplatform release and renamed it "Sonic 4." This shift is still visible in the game today; some levels contain environmental signs that still read "Sonic the Portable."

The project served as a bridge between two eras of fandom. Producer Takashi Iizuka wanted to cater to older fans who loved the Sega Genesis titles and newer players who enjoyed modern hits like Sonic Unleashed (2008). To achieve this, the team used 2.5D graphics—rendering characters in 3D while restricting movement to a 2D plane—and incorporated the "homing attack" from the 1998 Sonic Adventure. They also revived iconic locations from the original 1991 and 1992 games to tap into nostalgia, while intentionally omitting voice acting to maintain the classic feel.

The path to release was rocky. A prototype leaked in early 2010 caused a backlash that forced Sega to delay the game from July to October 2010. This extra time allowed developers to replace mobile-specific levels with content better suited for consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While it sold over one million copies in its first year, the ambitious trilogy was cut short: Episode II arrived in 2012, but Episode III was ultimately cancelled.
