How a group of dedicated fans revitalized a gaming icon
In short: After years of poorly received titles, Sonic the Hedgehog saw a massive resurgence in 2017. This wasn't thanks to a major studio, but a team of former fangame developers who used a custom engine to capture the magic of the 1990s.
In 2015, Australian programmer Christian "Taxman" Whitehead commenced work on Sonic Mania. Sega had previously hired Whitehead to create improved mobile versions of Genesis classics, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD. After presenting a prototype titled Sonic Discovery to producer Takashi Iizuka, the project was greenlit with the working title Sonic Mania—a name reflecting the team's "maniacal" fandom.
The team, which included members from PagodaWest Games and Headcannon, utilized Whitehead's proprietary Retro Engine. Their goal was to achieve a visual fidelity that sat somewhere between the capabilities of the Sega Genesis and the Sega Saturn. The gameplay was heavily modeled after Sonic 3, featuring boss battles at the end of each zone and a structure of two acts per level. This approach helped the game become the highest-rated Sonic title in fifteen years upon its release.
The game's narrative involves Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles battling Doctor Eggman and his new robotic henchmen, the Hard-Boiled Heavies, who gain power from the Phantom Ruby. While the game was praised for its faithfulness to the series' origins and its level design, some critics noted a lack of originality. Despite this, the title was a commercial success, selling over one million copies within its first year of release.
The soundtrack, composed by Tee Lopes, drew inspiration from various sources, including 1990s popular music and the work of Michael Jackson. Lopes initially aimed for a sound reminiscent of Sonic CD, but eventually incorporated influences from older Sega titles like The Revenge of Shinobi. The final product was released in August 2017 across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
