The world's oldest surviving football league was born from a dispute over rules
In short: Before the modern era of professional leagues, Australian rules football was a chaotic landscape of conflicting codes. In 1877, a group of delegates met in Adelaide to end the confusion, establishing a governing body that remains the oldest continuous football league on the planet.
The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) traces its origins to 30 April 1877, when the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) was formed. The league's foundation was driven by a desperate need for uniformity. Prior to this, matches were often plagued by misunderstandings because clubs played under different regulations, such as the 'Old Adelaide rules' or the 'Kensington rules.' In 1876, a pivotal meeting at the Prince Alfred Hotel saw delegates adopt the Melbourne Football Rules, with minor amendments to better suit local preferences, such as replacing the crossbar and top rope with two upright posts of unlimited height.
The early years of the association were marked by significant instability and structural shifts. The competition was frequently disrupted by clubs folding, merging, or resigning. For instance, by the 1885 season, six of the original eight foundation clubs had already left the competition. In 1888, a major dispute saw the powerhouse clubs Adelaide, Port Adelaide, and South Adelaide withdraw from the SAFA to form their own association, leading to the temporary creation of the South Australian United Football Association.
While the league's status has evolved, its importance to the region remains central. For much of its history, the SANFL was one of the 'big three' Australian rules leagues alongside the VFL and WAFL. While the SANFL became a top-tier AFL feeder league following the 1991 addition of the Adelaide Crows and the 1997 arrival of the Port Adelaide Power, it stays Australia's most powerful non-professional competition. Today, the league manages everything from junior and country football to specialized community programs across South Australia.
