In short: Before they were a cult alternative rock staple, the members of Soul Coughing were regulars in the experimental downtown scene. Led by frontman Mike Doughty—a doorman known for improvised comedic raps—the band blended jazz grooves with hip-hop and oddball samples to create a sound unlike anything else in the 1990s.

Formed in the early 1990s, Soul Coughing emerged from the vibrant experimental scene centered around The Knitting Factory in New York City. The band featured drummer Yuval Gabay, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, keyboardist and sampler Mark Degli Antoni, and vocalist/guitarist Mike Doughty. Their sound was famously described by Doughty himself as "deep slacker jazz," a term that captured their idiosyncratic mix of improvisational jazz, electronics, and noisy experimentalism. The group first performed under the name M. Doughty's Soul Coughing during a 1992 set at the venue. This early period saw the musicians frequently collaborating with composer John Zorn on his experimental works.

The band's rise was marked by a rapid ascent from the club scene to major label recognition. Within a year of their formation, they signed with Slash Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records. They released three primary studio albums: Ruby Vroom in 1994, Irresistible Bliss in 1996, and El Oso in 1998. While they achieved minor hit singles like "Super Bon Bon" and "Soundtrack to Mary," they also found success on the Billboard 200 charts with their later works. Their discography includes the 1998 release El Oso, which incorporated elements of drum and bass. Additionally, their tracks appeared on various popular soundtracks, including the X-Files and the video game Gran Turismo 2.

Despite their success, the band's trajectory was non-linear. They officially broke up in 2000, though members occasionally reunited for sporadic performances, such as a 2022 appearance by Doughty and Steinberg in Los Angeles. After a long hiatus, the original quartet announced a reunion in June 2024 for a United States tour scheduled for September and October of that year, marking a significant return for one of the '90s' most unique cult bands. The band's legacy is even recognised by a star on a Minneapolis nightclub mural. This honour celebrates artists who have made significant cultural impacts or played sold-out shows in the city.
