In short: South Dakota State University has transformed from a Division II program into a dominant force in college football. With a 14-year playoff streak and two national championships, the Jackrabbits have built a dynasty fueled by massive infrastructure investments and a rise to national prominence.

The Jackrabbits' ascent to the top of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is a study in strategic growth. After competing in the North Central Conference as a Division II program until 2003, the university moved to the FCS in 2004. They initially joined the Great West Football Conference as a charter member before transitioning to the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) in 2008. This move proved pivotal, establishing them as a consistent powerhouse over the last two decades.

Success has been underpinned by significant capital investment in facilities. The university opened a 19,340-seat stadium in 2016 and a state-of-the-art student-athlete center in 2010. A key component is the Stiegelmeier Family Student-Athlete Center, which opened in 2014 as one of the largest indoor practice facilities in Division I. Spanning over 149,000 square feet, it features a 300-meter track and a soy-based Astroturf football field, providing a high-tech training ground that rivals major programs.

The results of this investment are tangible. The Jackrabbits have achieved a 14-year playoff streak as of November 2025, the second-longest in the FCS. They reached the national championship game three times between 2020 and 2023, winning both the 2023 and 2024 titles. Their 2024 season was particularly historic: under first-year head coach Jimmy Rogers—a former team captain—the team finished with a perfect 15–0 record, marking their first undefeated season in over 70 years.

The program's reach now extends into the national spotlight. ESPN's College GameDay has been hosted by this institution, making it one of just 13 FCS schools to do so. This visibility is bolstered by a six-year media rights agreement with the MVFC, ensuring a minimum of nine games are showcased on ESPN platforms annually, cementing their status as a premier destination for college football.
