In short: Born from the chaos of the 1917 Russian Civil War, the Red Army began as a voluntary formation without ranks. Yet, through massive conscription and strategic integration of former Imperial officers, it evolved into one of the most formidable and modernized military forces in human history.

The origins of the Soviet military lie in the Russian Civil War (1917–1923), where the Bolsheviks established the Red Army by decree on January 15, 1918. Initially, the force operated as a voluntary organization where officers were chosen through democratic elections. However, the exigencies of war led to a rapid shift toward professionalization. By May 1918, the government imposed mandatory service for men aged 18 to 40, and the democratic election of officers was eventually abolished in favor of a more traditional hierarchy.

To solve the problem of professional expertise, the Bolsheviks turned to the former Imperial Russian Army. By August 1920, they had drafted approximately 315,000 ex-officers to serve as 'military specialists' (voyenspets). This integration of pre-revolutionary expertise was accompanied by a strict system of political oversight; every unit was assigned a political commissar, or politruk, who held the authority to override commanders to ensure loyalty to the Communist Party.

By the 1980s, the Soviet military had reached a peak of modernization, characterized by immense firepower and high mobility. The forces were organized into five primary branches: the Ground Forces, the Air Forces, the Navy, the Air Defence Forces, and the Strategic Rocket Forces. While the Ground Forces remained the largest branch, the entire military apparatus was regarded by international observers as one of the most powerful in history, maintaining a massive presence across Europe and the world.
