Searching for the first sparks of life in Earth's extremes

Space Documentary The Day Earth Was Born Part 1 2 · 46:39 · Video: Science & Technology · Watch at the source

In short: How did life first emerge on our planet? This documentary follows astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson as he explores the most hostile environments on Earth to find clues about our biological origins.

The search for life's beginnings leads scientists to 'extreme' environments where microorganisms thrive against all odds. These include microbes living two miles deep inside mine shafts, organisms surviving in acid-dripping caves with battery-strength acidity, and life found within noxious gas bubbles on the Pacific ocean floor.

By studying these resilient microbes, researchers hope to understand the planet's first primitive life forms. The investigation also looks at controversial chemical 'signatures' of life embedded in three-billion-year-old rocks and meteorites scattered across the globe.
