In short: Once a dominant force in Asian volleyball, the South Korean men's national team has struggled to replicate its golden era. From Olympic glory in the 1980s to recent shifts in global rankings, the story of this squad is one of shifting continental tides.

The South Korean men's national volleyball team experienced its most significant international successes during the late 20th century. The squad achieved its highest Olympic finish in 5th place at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. On the global stage, the team reached a peak of 4th place during the 1978 FIVB World Championship. The program has participated in nine FIVB World Championship tournaments to date. This period of high-level competition helped establish their presence in the international volleyball community.

Continental dominance was a hallmark of the program during several decades. The team secured three gold medals at the Asian Games, specifically in 1978, 2002, and 2006. Their performance in the Asian Championship was equally notable, earning four gold medals, including home victories in Seoul in 1989 and Changwon in 2001, alongside titles in 1993 and 2003. The team also secured a second-place finish at the 2008 Asian Men's Volleyball Cup. These continental successes highlight a period of intense regional competition.

Despite this storied history, the team has faced challenges in recent years. After competing in eight Olympic Games, the squad has not appeared in the Olympic tournament since the 2000 Sydney Games. Currently, the team holds the 2/26th position in the FIVB World Rankings.

The roster continues to evolve, with a 14-man lineup prepared for the 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Continental Championship. While the team has seen various head coaches, including Im Do-heon and Park Ki-won, the struggle to return to the Olympic stage remains a central narrative for the program. The squad's recent history includes a third-place finish at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men's Challenger Cup. This result provided a brief moment of resurgence on the global stage. The current 14-man roster for the 2026 AVC championship includes players such as Hwang Taek-eui and Han Sun-soo. This group will look to rebuild the nation's standing.
