How a new nation built its football identity from the ground up
In short: Born from independence, the South Sudan national football team—the Bright Stars—has navigated civil war and political shifts to find its footing on the pitch. From their first draws to record-breaking victories, witness the rapid ascent of a team carving out its place in African football.
The South Sudan national football team, known as the Bright Stars, began its international journey following the country's independence. The team's foundation was overseen by Zoran Đorđević, who was appointed on 25 May 2011. While their inaugural year was highlighted by a documentary titled 'Soccer Coach Zoran and his African Tigers', the team's competitive path was marked by significant logistical hurdles. For instance, due to the South Sudanese Civil War, a match against Mozambique was moved from Maputo to the Khartoum Stadium in Sudan.
The team's formal recognition came in stages. They were admitted as a CAF member on 10 February 2012 during a general assembly in Gabon, followed by FIFA membership on 25 May 2012 in Budapest, Hungary. Their first full international match occurred on 10 July 2012, resulting in a 2–2 draw against Uganda in Juba, with goals from James Moga and Richard Justin Lado. This debut saw the nation enter the FIFA rankings in 199th place by August of that year.
Since then, the Bright Stars have experienced both struggle and triumph. They achieved their first official victory on 5 September 2015, a 1–0 win against Equatorial Guinea. Their most significant offensive performance came during the 2019 AFCON qualifying, where they secured a record 6–0 win over Djibouti in Juba. Despite facing challenges as one of Africa's lower-ranked teams, they have shown resilience, such as their first away victory against Seychelles in October 2019, which allowed them to advance to the qualifying group stage for three consecutive editions.
