Can ancient water management techniques help us survive modern climate change in arid mountains?
In short: This lecture examines how traditional water systems in the Sinai Peninsula provide a blueprint for managing extreme weather. Drawing on two decades of field research, the presentation explores how ancient heritage and knowledge offer vital strategies for navigating the challenges of both drought and flash floods.
Adapting to climate change in high-elevation regions requires a complex integration of governance, spatial planning, and financial frameworks. While mountain communities have historically managed cyclic droughts, modern extreme events like flash floods pose significant new threats to local livelihoods. The Sinai Peninsula Research project highlights that ancient water infrastructure remains a critical asset for balancing the scarcity and abundance of water resources.
The research presented is based on over 20 years of field surveys conducted in the Sinai Peninsula. The lecture connects these heritage landscapes to broader contemporary discussions on ecological connectivity and green infrastructure, drawing on expertise from institutions including the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Durham University, and the University of Oxford’s EAMENA project.
