The relentless stamina of the man nicknamed Forrest Gump
In short: From a banking apprenticeship in Zürich to dominating the Italian Serie A, Stephan Lichtsteiner’s career was defined by an unparalleled physical engine. Known as 'The Swiss Express,' this defender mastered the art of the lung-bursting run, collecting 14 trophies during a legendary seven-year stint in Turin.
Stephan Lichtsteiner’s professional trajectory is a study in athletic endurance and tactical versatility. Born in Adligenswil, the Swiss defender initially pursued a banking apprenticeship with Credit Suisse before committing to football. Known as 'The Swiss Express' and 'Forrest Gump', he utilised great endurance and vigorous right-sided surges. Despite occasional criticism regarding his technical skill, his knack for finding gaps and providing crosses proved essential to Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system at Juventus.
His tenure in Italy remains his most decorated era. After joining Lazio in 2008 for an estimated €1.5 million, he moved to Juventus in 2011 for a €10 million fee. In Turin, he became a cornerstone of a dominant era, winning seven consecutive Serie A titles and 14 trophies in total. His defensive reliability and offensive contributions, such as being Juventus's top assist-maker in the 2013–14 season alongside Paul Pogba, helped the club maintain a formidable record.
However, his career was not without intensity and controversy. A referee once described him as the most 'disagreeable' player they had encountered, noting his 'angry and grumpy' demeanor. On the pitch, he was known for heated confrontations, such as a booking during a high-tension Derby della Capitale against Roma. Despite the friction, his international legacy is profound; earning 108 caps, he stands as the third most-capped player in Swiss history, representing his nation at two European Championships and three FIFA World Cups.
