How a Brazilian defender named after a German legend became a Serie A titan
In short: Born in Bahia and named in honour of Andreas Brehme, Gleison Bremer has carved a path from modest Brazilian beginnings to the heart of Juventus. Renowned for his tactical positioning and speed, he has overcome significant injuries to become one of the most decorated defenders in modern Italian football.
Gleison Bremer Silva Nascimento, born on 18 March 1997, began his professional journey in Brazil before moving to Italy in 2018. Initially joining Torino, he spent his first season as a reserve player. However, following the retirement of veteran defender Emiliano Moretti, Bremer secured a starting role in the 2019–20 season. His development was rapid; by the 2021–22 campaign, his defensive consistency earned him the official title of Serie A's best defender.
In July 2022, Bremer made a high-profile transfer to Juventus. His tenure in Turin has been marked by both professional triumphs and physical setbacks. He played a pivotal role in Juventus's 2024 Coppa Italia victory, yet his career has also been interrupted by serious injuries. In October 2024, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear during a Champions League match against RB Leipzig, which sidelined him for the remainder of that season. He later faced a meniscus injury in October 2025 that kept him out for 78 days, though he successfully returned to the pitch by December.
Beyond his club success, Bremer has been a consistent presence for the Brazil national team. He made his international debut in September 2022 and featured in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. While he has struggled to secure consistent minutes in major international tournaments, he marked a personal milestone in March 2026 by scoring his first goal for his country. Often compared to the legendary Brazilian defender Lúcio for his defensive intelligence, Bremer continues to be recognized for his versatility, earning spots in the EA Sports FC Serie A Team of the Season in 2023, 2024, and 2026.
