From non-league streets to the Championship: the rise of Steve Cotterill
In short: How does a striker whose career ended with a knee injury transform into a decorated football manager? Steve Cotterill’s journey took him from the depths of the sixth tier to guiding clubs to league titles and record-breaking points totals.
Born in Cheltenham in 1964, Cotterill’s path was defined by resilience. His playing career as a striker was cut short in 1996 due to a recurring knee injury, but his tactical mind proved even more durable. After a stint with Sligo Rovers in Ireland, where he reached a League of Ireland Cup final, he returned to his hometown club, Cheltenham Town, to begin his managerial ascent. Before his managerial career took off, he played professionally for Wimbledon after moving from non-league football. He also spent time on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion to regain fitness following a serious ligament injury.
During his time at Cheltenham, Cotterill achieved an incredible turnaround, elevating the team from the sixth tier to the third division within five years. This success included winning the FA Trophy in 1998 and securing promotion to the Football League. His ability to build winning sides led to high-profile roles, including a tenure at Burnley where he achieved a fifth-round FA Cup run against Liverpool. His leadership at Burnley included a notable victory over Aston Villa in the League Cup. He also earned the title of the club's longest-serving manager during his three-year tenure.
Cotterill's career has been marked by both rapid successes and sudden exits. He guided Notts County to the League Two title in 2010 and led Bristol City to a record-breaking 99 points and the League One title in the 2014–15 season. Despite his achievements, his career has seen him navigate the complexities of club takeovers and financial instability at clubs like Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest. His time at Portsmouth was particularly challenging as he worked to stabilise the club during a period of near-liquidation. Furthermore, he was appointed as a coach for Queens Park Rangers to assist Harry Redknapp.
