In short: Steve Beuerlein’s football journey was defined by extreme highs and punishing lows. From breaking nearly every passing record at Notre Dame to surviving a grueling shoulder surgery, he navigated contract disputes and coaching clashes to eventually secure a Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys.

Beuerlein's collegiate career at Notre Dame was marked by both brilliance and physical hardship. After a standout high school career at Servite, he joined the Fighting Irish, where he became a prolific passer. By his senior year in 1986, under coach Lou Holtz, he achieved his best statistical season, throwing for 2,211 yards and 13 touchdowns. He finished his college career in 1987 having broken almost every passing and total offense record in the program's history.

However, his professional path was rarely smooth. A significant shoulder injury in 1984 required surgery that removed an inch of his collarbone and his entire acromioclavicular joint. After a stint with the Los Angeles Raiders, where he faced contract holdouts and benchings, he found success with the Dallas Cowboys. Following an injury to starter Troy Aikman, Beuerlein led the Cowboys to an 11–5 record and their first playoff appearance since 1985, ultimately earning a Super Bowl XXVII championship in 1992.

The latter part of his career was characterized by instability and friction. In Arizona, head coach Buddy Ryan famously labeled him a 'cancer' before exposing him to the expansion draft. He then became the first starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995, but faced further challenges with injuries and coaching changes. Despite these setbacks, Beuerlein remained a respected figure, even serving as a mentor to players like Kerry Collins during his time with the Carolina Panthers.
