The ferocious hit that defined a legendary NFL career
In short: In 1990, Steve Atwater delivered a collision so violent it became his career's defining moment. By stopping the 260-pound 'Nigerian Nightmare' Christian Okoye in his tracks, the Denver Broncos safety proved that instincts and sheer force could transform a defensive unit.
Steve Atwater's ascent to NFL stardom began with a significant positional shift. Originally an option-style quarterback at Lutheran High School North, he moved to safety upon attending the University of Arkansas. Although his 4.63s 40-yard dash during the NFL Scouting Combine sparked doubts regarding his velocity, his 1989 East-West Shrine Game showing—earning him Defensive Player of the Game—improved his draft standing.
The Denver Broncos eventually selected him in the first round, 20th overall, in the 1989 NFL Draft. Atwater became a cornerstone of the Broncos' defense, often paired with Dennis Smith to form a massive safety tandem. His impact was most visible in his ability to fortify the run defense.
This was epitomized during a 1990 Monday Night Football game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Atwater met the 260-pound running back Christian Okoye with such force that the hit instantly became his most famous play, a moment Broncos coach Mike Shanahan noted would be remembered forever. His consistency was remarkable. Atwater was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and a two-time Super Bowl champion. Between 1990 and 1996, he maintained an incredible run of seven consecutive Pro Bowl selections. His defensive prowess was eventually recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted on February 1, 2020, cementing his legacy as one of the most formidable safeties in the history of the league.
