In short: Su Dingfang was a military titan who reshaped the map of the seventh-century world. From crushing the Western Turkic Khaganate to conquering Baekje, his tactical brilliance defined the Tang dynasty's reach. Yet, despite his monumental victories, his legacy remains a complex mix of strategic genius and controversial military conduct.

Born in 591, Su Dingfang began his career as a teenage fighter in his father's militia during the chaotic final years of the Sui dynasty. After serving various rebel leaders, he eventually joined the Tang military under the renowned general Li Jing. By 630, he had distinguished himself as a forward commander, playing a critical role in the decisive defeat of the Eastern Turkic Khaganate.

Su's most significant achievement occurred in 657, when he led a campaign against the Western Turkic Khaganate. Facing nearly 100,000 enemy troops with fewer than 20,000 men, Su utilized a disciplined infantry formation armed with long spears to repel a massive cavalry charge. His relentless pursuit of the enemy through severe snowstorms ultimately dismantled the Khaganate, expanding the Tang empire's western borders to their historical maximum. He later secured further victories in 659 against the rebel Duman and, according to the Old Tibetan Annals, defeated a massive Tibetan force of 80,000 with only 1,000 soldiers.

Despite his battlefield success, Su's career was marked by friction. During the 660 campaign against Baekje, his forces were accused of mistreating the local population, which fueled a prolonged resistance movement. Furthermore, while he was celebrated for his "miraculous strategies," historians like Liu Xu later lamented that the promotions and fiefs Su received were disproportionately small compared to his immense contributions to the empire. Su died in 667, leaving behind a reputation as a commander who remained effective from the beginning to the end of his long career.
