The Su-57 Felon: Russia's attempt to balance stealth with traditional high-performance air combat
In short: The Sukhoi Su-57 is a heavyweight multirole fighter designed to challenge the limits of modern aerial warfare. While often labeled a fifth-generation aircraft, it prioritizes supermaneuverability and counter-stealth capabilities over the strict, smooth-surface stealth profiles favored by Western designs. It represents a distinct departure from traditional Russian aviation engineering.
Launched in 1999 as the PAK FA initiative, the Su-57 was developed by the Sukhoi design bureau to replace legacy platforms like the Su-27 and MiG-29. The aircraft first flew in 2010, marking a significant evolution for the Russian Aerospace Forces. Unlike U.S. stealth fighters that rely on immaculately smooth surfaces to minimize radar cross sections, the Su-57 embraces a design philosophy that emphasizes extreme post-stall maneuverability and high performance. This approach reflects a tension between modern stealth requirements and traditional Russian military doctrines that favor rugged, high-agility platforms.
The Su-57 is equipped with a sophisticated defensive and sensor suite, including the N036 Belka AESA radar system and L-band antennas integrated into the wing’s leading edges to detect stealthy targets. It is likely the first fighter to feature a directed infrared countermeasures system, which uses a focused beam to neutralize incoming heat-seeking missiles. Its airframe incorporates an internal weapons bay to reduce drag and enhance supercruise—the ability to sustain supersonic speeds without afterburners. Despite these advancements, the aircraft faces challenges, including a large radar signature from its rear hemisphere and a slow production rate.
By early 2025, approximately 30 production aircraft had been delivered, with a total goal of 76. Integration has been hampered by technical hurdles and the financial strain of Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. To address its limitations, developers are exploring the use of the S-70 Okhotnik-B, a stealthy unmanned combat air vehicle designed to operate in tandem with the Su-57. Whether the Felon provides a sufficient leap in capability over the Su-35 to justify its high cost remains a subject of debate among military analysts.
