How a pandemic forced a wrestling giant to build a digital stadium
In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled WWE's plans for a massive live crowd in Boston, the promotion didn't just move the show—they reinvented it. They traded a traditional arena for a high-tech 'bio-secure bubble,' creating a virtual experience that blurred the line between reality and digital spectacle.
The 2020 SummerSlam was originally slated for the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. However, local officials suspended all large-scale gatherings due to the pandemic, forcing WWE to pivot from its usual touring model. After months of filming behind closed doors at a training facility in Orlando, the promotion moved the event to the Amway Center. This shift marked a significant transition: it was the first major WWE event held outside of their private performance center since March 2020, yet it remained strictly fan-free.
To compensate for the lack of a physical audience, WWE partnered with The Famous Group to create the 'WWE ThunderDome.' This bio-secure bubble utilized nearly 1,000 LED boards to display rows of virtual fans who registered online. The production team integrated arena audio with these digital chants and deployed drones, lasers, and pyro to enhance the spectacle. Executive Vice President Kevin Dunn noted that this technology allowed for production feats that were previously impossible in a traditional setting.
The event also served as a historical turning point for the 'Big Four' annual pay-per-views. Because every following occasion shifted into stadiums, this represented the concluding SummerSlam hosted within a conventional arena. Furthermore, it was the last time the promotion livestreamed on the American version of the WWE Network before its 2021 merger with Peacock. The night featured major milestones, including the in-ring debut of Dominik Mysterio and the return of Roman Reigns after a five-month hiatus.
