In short: In 1991, one of professional wrestling's 'Big Four' events broke tradition. By moving from Thanksgiving Day to the eve of the holiday, it paved the way for a historic title change and a career-defining betrayal that would reshape the industry for decades.

The 1991 Survivor Series was a pivotal moment for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It marked the first time the annual event shifted from Thanksgiving Day to Thanksgiving Eve, held on Wednesday, November 27, 1991, at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. This edition also broke the mold by being the first to feature a singles match as a primary attraction rather than exclusively consisting of tag team elimination matches.

The centerpiece was 'Hogan’s Gravest Challenge,' where The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship. This victory was significant because Undertaker had debuted just one year prior and had yet to be pinned in a televised match. While Hogan later claimed the move caused a real-life neck injury, evidence from 2024 suggests his head never actually touched the mat during the tombstone piledriver.

The event also served as a catalyst for legendary character arcs. It featured the first defense of the WWF Championship at Survivor Series and saw Shawn Michaels' 'heel turn.' During a match with Marty Jannetty, Michaels was accidentally eliminated; while they appeared to reconcile on a talk show segment shortly after, Michaels eventually superkicked Jannetty through a plate-glass window. This betrayal jumpstarted Michaels' career as one of the industry's biggest stars.

The card was also defined by high-stakes drama involving Ric Flair and Roddy Piper. Despite several planned participants being sidelined by injury or controversy—including Sid Justice, Jake Roberts, and Jim Neidhart—the event successfully transitioned the promotion into a new era of storytelling, eventually leading to Jack Tunney vacating the title due to the controversial finishes of the Hogan-Undertaker rivalry.
