In short: Super Bowl X wasn't just a clash of titans; it was a collision of dynasties. For the first time in history, both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys entered the arena as former champions, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle of established legacies.

Played on January 18, 1976, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Super Bowl X served as a centerpiece for the United States Bicentennial. The event featured special Bicentennial patches on jerseys and celebrations during both the pre-game and halftime shows. It was a landmark moment for the NFL, marking the first time the league utilized a wireless microphone for the referee to announce penalties—an innovation introduced by Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm.

The matchup pitted the league's two most popular teams against one another, showcasing contrasting styles. By using a powerful running attack and their 'Steel Curtain' defence, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the initial #1 seed to arrive at the Super Bowl. They finished the regular season 12–2, ranking 2nd in the league for fewest points allowed. The Dallas Cowboys reached the Super Bowl as the initial NFC wild-card side, employing a high-tech passing scheme and 'flex' defence to surpass a 10–4 record.

The game was defined by a dramatic shift in momentum. After a scoreless third quarter, the Steelers trailed 7–10 at halftime—the second time in history a winning team trailed at the break. Pittsburgh rallied for 14 unanswered points, fueled by Lynn Swann, who caught a 64-yard touchdown and set a Super Bowl record with 161 receiving yards. Despite a late Dallas rally that brought the score to 21–17, Pittsburgh safety Glen Edwards intercepted a pass as time expired to secure the victory.

The game also introduced several firsts: it was the first Super Bowl to feature two soccer-style kickers, Roy Gerela and Toni Fritsch, and the first to display the game's edition (in Roman numerals) on the field. For the Steelers, the win made them the third franchise to win consecutive titles, joining the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers.
