In short: Greek football underwent a radical structural overhaul in 2019, creating a new second-tier landscape. From its inception with just 12 teams to a period of expansion featuring some of the country's biggest clubs, the league is now entering a phase of aggressive consolidation.

The Super League 2, formerly known as the Football League or Beta Ethniki, was established in 2019 as part of a major restructuring of the Greek football league championships. This move positioned it as the official second-tier professional men's association football league in the country, sitting directly below the Greek Super League 1 and above the Third National Division.

The league's early years were characterized by a smaller footprint, with only 12 clubs participating during its first and second seasons of operation. However, the 2021–2022 season marked a significant turning point. Following the abolition of the third-level Football League, the league was restructured to include 24 teams. This period was notable for the inclusion of several of Greece's most prominent clubs, including Olympiacos, PAOK, Panathinaikos, and AEK Athens.

Recent years have seen a trend toward contraction and reorganization. The 2023–2024 season saw the league split into two groups with 24 clubs, but by the 2024–2025 season, the number of teams was reduced to 20. This trajectory of downsizing continues into the future; for the 2025–2026 season, the league will maintain 20 teams across two groups before moving to a single group of 16 teams for the 2026–2027 season.

This upcoming 2026–2027 transition represents a significant shift in format. The league plans to move to a 30-matchday schedule without the use of play-offs for promotion or play-outs for relegation. This evolution reflects a strategic effort to streamline the professional pyramid and stabilize the competition for the clubs involved.
