How Sweden's second football tier manages its high-stakes promotion battles
In short: In the Swedish football pyramid, Superettan serves as the critical bridge to the top flight. This competitive second tier operates through a rigorous system of promotion and relegation, where every match from April to October matters for a club's survival or its ascent to the elite Allsvenskan.
Established in 2000, Superettan replaced a fragmented system of regionalized leagues that had previously operated under the names Division 1 and Division 2. Today, the league consists of 16 clubs competing in a schedule that spans from April to October. Each club participates in 30 matches per season, resulting in a total of 240 games played across the entire league annually.
The movement between tiers is highly structured. At the conclusion of a season, the two teams at the bottom of the table are relegated to Division 1. Conversely, the top two finishers earn automatic promotion to the top-tier Allsvenskan. The stakes are further heightened by play-off scenarios: the third-placed team in Superettan faces the third-lowest team from Allsvenskan, while the third and fourth-placed Superettan clubs must contend against the runners-up from the two Division 1 leagues.
The league's commercial history shows a shift in media landscape. Since 2006, the Swiss corporation Kentaro has held the television rights. While the TV4 Group broadcasted matches via TV4 Sport between 2011 and 2015, a subsequent agreement was announced in March 2017, securing Eurosport as the domestic broadcaster for both Superettan and Allsvenskan from 2020 through 2025.
Attendance figures vary wildly depending on the clubs involved. While the 2019 season saw an average of 1,632 spectators per match, the league has seen massive outliers. The most significant attendance spike occurred in 2014, when a match between Hammarby and Ljungskile drew a record 31,074 fans.
