In short: For nearly a century, SuperValu served as a cornerstone of American food distribution. From its roots in 1926 to its massive 2006 acquisition of Albertsons, the company mastered the complex logistics of feeding millions. Today, its storied brand has largely vanished into a new corporate identity.

SuperValu's lineage traces back to 1870, when Hugh G. Harrison funded B.S. Bull and Company, a dry goods wholesaler in Minneapolis. Its direct ancestor, the Winston and Newell Company, was formed in 1926 from a merger of two companies backed by B.S. Bull's original backers. By 1952, the firm adopted the SuperValu name, establishing a 'virtual chain' model that allowed independently owned stores to operate under a unified banner. The company grew through aggressive expansion and strategic acquisitions. In 1955, it acquired the Joannes Brothers Company, and in 1963, it purchased the Food Marketing Corporation, which brought SuperValu into the institutional market. A pivotal moment occurred in 2006 when SuperValu, in partnership with CVS and Cerberus Group, acquired Albertsons, Inc.

for $9.7 billion. This massive deal added over 1,100 stores to its portfolio, including brands like Jewel-Osco and Shaw's. However, the scale of these acquisitions brought significant financial pressure. In 2012, a disappointing quarterly report caused SuperValu's share price to plummet by approximately 45% in a single day. This led to a period of rapid divestiture; by 2013, the company sold off major chains like Acme Markets and Jewel-Osco to Cerberus Capital Management. In 2018, the company was purchased by United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) for $1.3 billion in cash plus $1.6 billion in assumed debt. By June 2022, the SuperValu brand was officially discontinued for most operations, with its distribution facilities rebranded to UNFI.
