How a 1917 cooperative became a massive food distribution powerhouse
In short: From a small group of 43 grocers to a multi-state retail giant, SpartanNash has spent over a century evolving. Through strategic mergers and complex acquisitions, this Michigan-based company has transformed from a cooperative into a critical link in the American food supply chain.
Founded in 1917 as the Grand Rapids Wholesale Grocery Company, the organization began as a cooperative. By 1957, it adopted the Spartan Stores name, eventually transitioning into a for-profit entity during the 1970s. The company's trajectory changed significantly in November 2013, when it merged with the Minnesota-based Nash Finch Company in an all-stock transaction valued at $1.3 billion. The business originally operated under the Spartan Stores name starting in 1957. This transition from a cooperative model to a for-profit structure occurred throughout the 1970s.
This merger resulted in the formation of the SpartanNash Company, expanding its reach across 44 states and into international markets including Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Today, the company serves diverse sectors, acting as the largest food distributor for United States military commissaries and exchanges through its MDV SpartanNash division. Additionally, 147 company-operated outlets bolster its retail footprint, operating via brands like D&W Fresh Market, Martin's Super Markets, and Family Fare. Its retail operations are primarily concentrated within the Midwestern United States. The company manages various local and regional grocery chains through these diverse banners.
The company's modern era has been defined by rapid expansion and high-profile partnerships. In 2016, it signed a contract with Amazon to supply grocery products for Prime Now's same-day perishable deliveries. Following its June 2025 acquisition announcement, SpartanNash was bought by C&S Wholesale Grocers—the parent firm of Piggly Wiggly—in September 2025. This acquisition followed a strategic announcement made earlier that year. The deal was finalised within three months of the initial public disclosure.
