The journeyman quarterback who navigated six college transfers and a professional dream
In short: In the modern era of college football, few players have experienced the transfer portal as intensely as T. J. Finley. From a top Louisiana recruit to a six-time transfer, his career is a remarkable study in persistence, shifting programs, and the pursuit of the NFL.
Tyler Jamal Finley’s ascent began as a highly regarded three-star prospect from Ponchatoula, Louisiana. By his senior year of high school, he was the premier quarterback recruit in his state, earning offers from powerhouse programs like Alabama, Oregon, and Auburn. He initially committed to LSU, signing his National Letter of Intent in December 2019 and enrolling early in January 2020.
Finley's collegiate path has been defined by frequent movement through the transfer portal. After seeing action as a starter for the Tigers in 2020, he entered the portal in May 2021 to join Auburn. His time with the Tigers saw significant moments, including a game-winning touchdown against Georgia State, but also periods of instability, such as being b/benched for a freshman and facing injury setbacks like a Grade 2 AC sprain in 2022.
The sheer scale of his movement is unprecedented. Between 2021 and 2026, Finley navigated the portal multiple times to join Texas State, Western Kentucky, Tulane, Georgia State, and eventually Incarnate Word. Each move brought new challenges, from leading Texas State to a record-breaking 8–5 season and a bowl victory to facing legal hurdles, including a 2025 suspension following an arrest involving stolen property.
Despite the turbulence of playing for seven different programs across seven seasons, Finley’s focus remained on the professional stage. After a stint with the Incarnate Word Cardinals, he ultimately decided to bypass another college season, announcing his intention to enter the 2026 NFL Draft.
