In short: T. J. Edwards began his football journey leading offenses as a quarterback. However, a pivotal recruitment decision in 2013 shifted his trajectory toward defense, ultimately propelling him from an undrafted free agent to a high-value NFL starter and Super Bowl participant.

Born on August 12, 1996, Edwards' professional path was shaped by a significant shift in collegiate recruitment. While he played quarterback at Lakes Community High School in Illinois, he was recruited for college football as a defensive player. In December 2013, he changed his commitment from Western Michigan to the University of Wisconsin after being recruited by defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Edwards became a standout inside linebacker. During his redshirt freshman year, he started all 13 games and led the team with 84 tackles, 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and one forced fumble. He was selected as an honourable mention All-Big Ten player and earned a place on the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American squad due to his college play.

After going undrafted in 2019, Edwards entered the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year, $1.76 million contract. He proved his versatility, contributing on special teams and defense, and eventually earned a role as a starting middle linebacker. His tenure with the Eagles included a Super Bowl LVII appearance in 2022, where he recorded six tackles and one pass defended in a 38–35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards' career has seen significant financial growth and team changes. In March 2023, he signed a three-year, $19.50 million contract with the Chicago Bears. By April 2025, he secured a two-year, $20 million extension with the Bears, marking his evolution from an undrafted prospect to a cornerstone defensive player in the NFL.
