In short: Tajikistan's journey into international football is a story of persistence over decades. After years of narrow misses and preliminary struggles, the national team finally secured its first-ever major tournament appearance in 2023, marking a significant milestone for the sport in the nation.

The Tajikistan national football team officially entered the international stage on April 11, 1994. Their debut was a regional fixture in Tashkent, where they suffered a narrow 0–1 defeat against Kazakhstan. This initial step paved the way for their first official competition: the qualifiers for the 1996 AFC Asian Cup. During that campaign, after Bahrain withdrew from the group, Tajikistan faced off against Uzbekistan and Bahrain's vacancy left them in a high-stakes play-off with their Middle Asian neighbors.

The path to success was often obstructed by inconsistency. While they recorded four victories during the 1998 FIFA World Cup preliminary stage—including a dominant 5–0 win over Turkmenistan—they were ultimately eliminated after falling to China. It took years of coaching changes and tactical shifts to find momentum. Following several failed attempts, the team hired Croatian manager Petar Šegrt for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualification cycle.

The breakthrough arrived in a unique format necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tajikistan competed in a centralized round-robin group hosted by Kyrgyzstan. They secured vital wins against Myanmar (4–0) and Singapore (1–0), while holding Kyrgyzstan to a scoreless draw. This performance allowed them to qualify for their first-ever AFC Asian Cup in 2023, where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time in history before being edged out by Jordan.

Beyond regional cups, Tajikistan has shown growth on the global stage. In September 2022, they competed in Thailand's King's Cup, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 2–1 and eventually winning the trophy via a penalty shootout against Malaysia. Looking ahead, the nation is set to share hosting duties with Uzbekistan for the second CAFA Nations Cup in June 2025.
