In short: In the high-stakes world of sumo, winning the championship is the ultimate goal. But for Takayasu Akira, a record-breaking nine second-place finishes tell a different story of resilience, physical endurance, and the narrow margins between glory and heartbreak.

Takayasu Akira, born in 1990 in Tsuchiura, holds a unique distinction in the top makuuchi division: he has been a tournament runner-up nine times, the highest number for any wrestler who has not secured a championship. His career is defined by a remarkable ability to contend for the Emperor's Cup, even while facing significant physical setbacks. From his promotion to the elite ōzeki rank on May 31, 2017, through to his recent battles in 2025, Takayasu has remained a constant presence in the upper echelons of the sport.

His path to the top was marked by early promise and intense discipline. Encouraged by his father to transition from baseball to sumo, he joined the Naruto stable (now Tagonoura) after junior high school. Despite several instances of running away due to the rigors of training, he eventually rose through the divisions, achieving a perfect 7–0 record in the makushott division in September 2010. He became one of the first sekitori born in the Heisei era, notably choosing to compete under his birth name rather than adopting a traditional shikona.

The physical toll of his career is evident in his medical history, which includes injuries to his thigh, back, elbow, and even a partial tear of his left pectoral muscle in 2024. He has even compared his physical state to 'a car that has travelled 300,000 kilometers.' Despite these challenges and various bouts with COVID-19, Takayasu continues to secure special prizes for fighting spirit and technique, proving that even without a yūshō, his impact on the dohyō remains profound.
