From Zenica to the NBA: the rapid rise of basketball star Tarik Biberović
In short: Born in Bosnia, Biberović has navigated a complex journey through European leagues to reach the NBA. From a teenage standout in Sarajevo to a EuroLeague champion with Fenerbahçe, his career is marked by high-scoring performances and a decisive shift in international allegiance that reshaped his professional trajectory.
Tarik Biberović's professional ascent began in Zenica, Bosnia, where he first played for KK Ten Zenica. By age 15, he had moved to Sarajevo to join OKK Spars, where his performance in the 2016–2017 Adidas Next Generation Tournament—averaging 17.8 points and 6.3 rebounds—marked him as a significant prospect. This early potential eventually led him to Fenerbahçe, a club competing in both the Turkish Basketball Super League and the EuroLeague.
His transition to elite European basketball was not without hurdles. Due to licensing regulations, Biberović was unable to appear in domestic games during the 2018–19 campaign, though he made his EuroLeague debut against Panathinaikos on 8 February 2019 at age 18. He eventually became a regular in the Basketball Super League during the 2020–21 season, appearing in 35 games and scoring a then-career-high 13 points against ALBA Berlin in December 2020.
Biberović's career reached new heights in the mid-2020s. He helped Fenerbahçe secure their second EuroLeague championship in Abu Dhabi on 25 May 2025, following a victory over Monaco in the final. This success coincided with a significant shift in his professional status; after being selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2023 NBA draft, his rights were traded to the Dallas Mavericks in July 2026. He subsequently signed a two-year, $6 million contract with Dallas, officially entering the NBA.
Beyond his club success, Biberović's international career saw a pivotal change in June 2018, when he switched his allegiance from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Turkey. He made his international debut for Turkey against Italy on 23 February 2024, recording 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists in an 87–80 loss.
