From Chelsea academy star to Ghana international: the resilient journey of Tariq Lamptey
In short: After a meteoric rise through Chelsea's prestigious academy, Tariq Lamptey faced a career defined by both brilliant debuts and devastating physical setbacks. His path from London's grassroots pitches to the international stage involves a complex decision regarding national allegiance and a battle against recurring injury.
Born in Hillingdon, Greater London, on 3 and 30 September 2000, Lamptey's footballing ascent began at age eight when he joined the Chelsea academy after playing for Larkur Rovers. His professional breakthrough arrived on 29 December 2019, when he replaced Fikayo Tomori during a Premier League victory against Arsenal. This appearance made him one of several academy graduates to feature under manager Frank Lampard, joining the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James.
In January 2020, Lamptey moved to Brighton & Hove Albion, where his career saw significant highs and lows. He experienced a notable Premier League start against Leicester City in June 2020 and scored his first goal against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2020. However, his momentum was frequently interrupted by injuries, including a hamstring issue in late 2020 that sidelined him for much of the following season, and a knee injury in March 2023 that ended his season prematurely.
A defining chapter of his career involved his international allegiance. Having represented England at the U18 to U21 levels, Lamptey faced speculation regarding a switch to Ghana. Following a period of deliberation in early 2022, the Ghana FA confirmed his eligibility, and he made his senior debut for Ghana on 23 September 2022, in a friendly against Brazil. He later represented Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His recent years have been marked by further transitions and physical challenges. After a contract extension at Brighton in June 2025, he joined Italian side Fiorentina in September 2025 for a reported €6 million plus add-ons. Tragately, a severe ACL tear occurred just weeks into his Italian tenure, leading to his contract termination by mutual agreement in May 2026. By July 2026, he joined Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer.
