In short: From its inaugural team in 1904 to the modern era of the Western Athletic Conference, the Tarleton State Texans have navigated a complex journey through various collegiate tiers, evolving from NAIA and Division II competition into the prestigious ranks of NCAA Division I.

The history of Tarleton State Texans football is defined by a steady climb through the American collegiate landscape. The program first fielded a team in 1904, beginning a long journey that has seen them compete across multiple governing bodies. Before reaching the highest levels of collegiate play, the Texans established their presence through four appearances in the NAIA playoffs, securing a combined record of 3–4 in those contests.

The program's trajectory shifted significantly as it moved through the NCAA hierarchy. The Texans achieved five appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs, finishing with a 4–5 record. This period of competition was spent as members of the Lone Star Conference. A significant shift happened during the 2020–21 season when the team joined the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

This transition coincided with a broader realignment in college football. In fall 2021, Tarleton became an inaugural member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) at the FCS level, helping to revive the league. This era of competition continued through a football-only partnership between the WAC and the ASUN Conference in 2021 and 2022. Eventually, these leagues merged to form the United Athletic Conference, with Tarleton serving as one of its nine inaugural members.

Currently, under coach Todd Whitten, the Texans host matches at Stephenville, Texas, in the 24,000-seat Memorial Stadium. Demonstrating elite competitive skill, the squad reached the Division I FCS playoffs twice, finishing with a 2–2 tally.
