In short: In late 2018, Ariana Grande faced a series of profound personal losses. Rather than following the traditional, slow-burn promotional cycles of pop stardom, she pivoted toward a rapid, vulnerable, and highly personal recording process that would ultimately shatter streaming records and redefine her career.

The creation of 'Thank U, Next' was born from a period of significant upheaval. Following the release of her album 'Sweetener' in August 2018, Grande experienced the death of her ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, in early September 2018, and the end of her five-month engagement to comedian Pete Davidson. These events prompted a brief media hiatus and a shift in her creative direction.

Moving away from standard industry marketing, Grande sought to record music with the speed and frequency often seen in hip-hop artists. The development was remarkably swift; her team wrote approximately nine songs in a single week, and most recording was completed within two weeks. This process resulted in a genre-blending record that incorporated pop, R&B, and trap, while exploring themes of grief, denial, and self-empowerment.

The album's commercial impact was immediate and historic. After Republic Records issued the album on 8 February 2019, every one of its 12 tracks hit the Billboard Hot 100, a milestone achieved previously by no solo artist. Both '7 Rings' and the title track started at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, representing her initial two number-one hits in America. The project topped charts in 17 countries and broke streaming records for the largest weekly streams for a pop and a female album in the US.

Beyond the charts, the album was a critical success, earning four Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year. The subsequent Sweetener World Tour, which ran from March to December 2019, grossed over $146 million from 97 shows.
