In short: Thangalaan blends historical drama with folklore, following a tribal leader in the Kolar Gold Fields during the British Raj. Director Pa. Ranjith crafts a surreal narrative where past lives and colonial exploitation collide, challenging conventional storytelling while exploring the heavy price of greed and the struggle for ancestral land.

Set in the 19th-century Kolar Gold Fields, Thangalaan follows a tribal leader who assists a British officer in locating gold, only to become entangled in a conflict involving a legendary sorceress named Aarathi. The film, directed by Pa. Ranjith and starring Vikram, draws on local folklore and the history of the region's miners. Ranjith, who began drafting the script after his 2018 film Kaala, sought to avoid similarities with other gold-themed cinema by incorporating metaphorical elements and researching the landscape through visits to the gold fields and interviews with descendants of the original miners.

The production was a massive undertaking, spanning 120 working days and featuring locations across Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, and Karnataka. The film’s technical ambition included shooting in 3D and utilizing complex visual effects to depict the protagonist's visions of his past lives, where he served as a tribal king protecting the land's resources. Malavika Mohanan, who plays Aarathi, prepared for her physically demanding role by learning Silambam and studying the physicality of women in American cinema. The narrative structure, which shifts between historical reality and mythological abstraction, proved polarizing for critics upon its August 2024 release.

While reviewers lauded Vikram’s intense performance and G. V. Prakash Kumar’s background score, the film faced criticism for its pacing, visual effects, and perceived historical inaccuracies. Despite these mixed reactions, the project remains a significant experimental work in Ranjith’s filmography, blending the harsh realities of debt bondage with the ethereal nature of local myths. Following its theatrical run and a successful Hindi-language release, a sequel was announced in August 2024, signaling that the story of Thangalaan and his community's fight for their land is far from over.
