How a simple romance became a record-breaking cinematic phenomenon
In short: In 2012, a gentle tale of inter-faith love captured the hearts of millions. Beyond its sweet narrative, the film Thattathin Marayathu achieved unprecedented commercial success, shattering distribution records in Kerala and proving that simple stories can command massive box office power.
Directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, Thattathin Marayathu tells the story of Vinod, a Hindu boy, and Aisha, a Muslim girl. The plot follows their connection, from a chance encounter at a Thalassery pier to the intense conflicts arising from their inter-faith relationship. The film's narrative structure moves between the present day—where Vinod faces police interrogation—and the past, detailing his efforts to win Aisha's heart through university competitions and secret meetings. The story's emotional weight is heightened by the characters' struggles, including Aisha being placed under house arrest by her uncle, Abdul Khader. The film's production was handled by Lumiere Film Company, a venture involving Sreenivasan, Mukesh, and Antony Edakolas.
The film's commercial impact was historic for Malayalam cinema. Within just 21 days, it grossed approximately ₹10.52 crore (US$1.1 million) across 67 screens in Kerala. Its distributor's share of ₹4.65 crore from theatres alone in three weeks set a new record. The film's success extended to specific regions, such as Ernakulam, where it netted ₹62 lakhs from various cinema halls, and even reached international markets, collecting significant sums from the US and UK box offices. In Thiruvananthapuram, the film achieved a distributor's share of ₹19.5 lakhs during its 21-day run. This massive scale of distribution was supported by a wide release across the Kerala box office.
While critics offered mixed reviews—with some praising its 'pure fresh air' quality and others finding the screenplay stuck in 'no man's land'—the film's cultural footprint was undeniable. It became the second-biggest grosser of 2012, earning over ₹18.9 crore at the box office. The soundtrack, composed by Shaan Rahman, also saw massive popularity, with the song 'Muthuchippi' garnering over six lakh hits on YouTube by late July 2012. The soundtrack's release was a major event, with the audio published by Mathrubhumi Music on 8 June 2012. Renowned actors like Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan even participated in the official audio release ceremony in Kochi.
