Was Hadrian truly one of Rome's five good emperors?

The Ancient Roman Emperor Hadrian · 12:26 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: Hadrian ruled during the Roman Empire's peak, yet his legacy remains complex. This overview examines his administrative achievements, his architectural ambitions, and the controversial military decisions that defined his reign.

Hadrian, who lived from 78 to 138 CE and reigned from 117 to 138 CE, is counted among the Five Good Emperors. His era is widely considered the height of Roman imperial power. Beyond his governance, he is remembered for massive infrastructure projects, most notably the coast-to-coast fortification in Britain known as Vallum Hadriani, which began construction around 122 CE.

While his reign provided a stable foundation for his successor, it was not without conflict. His brutal suppression of the Bar-Kochba Revolt remains a significant point of criticism. Historians suggest this harsh response followed traditional Roman policy, though it may have been exacerbated by Hadrian's personal frustration regarding opposition to his imperial decrees.
