When a fabricated lie becomes a reality for a reborn mastermind
In short: Minoru Kageno's dream was to pull strings from the shadows. After a fatal truck accident, he is reborn as Cid Kagenou in a fantasy world. He invents a fake conspiracy to fight, only to discover the villainous Cult of Diablos actually exists.
Starting in May 2018 on the website Shōsetsuka ni Narō, this series features illustrations by Tōzai and writing by Daisuke Aizawa. The narrative follows Minoru Kageno, a boy obsessed with becoming a mastermind who exerts power from the shadows. Following a sudden death caused by a truck, he is reincarnated as Cid Kagenou in a fantastical realm.
Cid's new life is defined by a commitment to mediocrity to hide his true strength. During his adventures, he cures an elven girl named Alpha of a mysterious illness. To explain his actions, he fabricates a story about a nefarious Cult of Diablos. He forms a secret organization called Shadow Garden to combat this imaginary threat, but the deception takes a surreal turn: the cult is real.
This blurring of fiction and reality forces Cid to navigate genuine political intrigue and magical conflicts. What began as a role-playing fantasy for Cid becomes a high-stakes struggle as he is forced to live up to the persona of Shadow. The franchise has seen massive commercial success, with circulation growing from 2 million copies in October 2022 to over 8 million copies by September 2026.
The intellectual property has expanded through various media, including a manga adaptation by Anri Sakano and an anime series produced by Nexus. While the story centers on Cid's delusions, the commercial scale of the series—spanning light novels, manga, and video games like Master of Garden—highlights the massive appeal of the 'isekai' genre.
