A 17-year coma, a magical other world, and a sudden return to modern Japan
In short: When Yōsuke Shibazaki woke from a 17-year coma, he didn't just face a changed world; he brought magic back with him. Now, his nephew Takafumi must help him navigate modern technology, YouTube revenue, and the bizarre memories of an adventure in a parallel dimension.
The series, written and illustrated by Hotondoshindeiru, began serialization on the ComicWalker app in June 2018. It follows Yōsuke Shibazaki, a 34-year-old man who spent nearly two decades in a coma after being hit by a truck. During those 17 years, he was actually transported to another world where he gained magical abilities but was frequently mistaken for an orc due to his appearance.
The narrative focuses on the friction between Yōsuke's magical past and his mundane present. While he struggles with modern culture and the decline of Sega home consoles—specifically the end of the Dreamcast era—his nephew, Takafumi Takaoka, sees a business opportunity in his uncle's magic, specifically through YouTube ad revenue. The story is characterized by a 'fish-out-of-water' humor that subverts traditional isekai tropes.
The series has seen significant commercial success, with manga circulation growing from 1.8 million copies in June 2022 to over 3.3 million by November 2022. An anime adaptation produced by Atelier Pontdarc aired between July 2022 and March 2023. While some critics, such as Christopher Farris of Anime News Network, noted that the art style can appear rough or minimally expressive, others praised the series for its chaotic, humorous take on the genre.
The cast includes complex figures like Sumika Fujimiya, Takafumi's childhood friend, and Mabel Laybelle, a reclusive woman who becomes a NEET after Yōsuke defeats a dragon without her mythical Ice Sword. The series explores how these characters reconcile past traumas and magical encounters with the realities of contemporary Japanese life.
