The indecisive autocrat who presided over the fall of the Romanov dynasty

The Last Tsar of Russia - Nicholas II I WHO DID WHAT IN WW1? · 7:34 · Video: The Great War · Watch at the source

In short: Nicholas II was the last tsar of Russia, a man of great personal charm but profound political weakness. While he believed his absolute power was a sacred duty from God, his inability to navigate the complexities of a modern empire helped trigger the very revolutions that would end his reign.

Nicholas II ascended to the throne in November 1894, succeeding his father, Alexander III. Despite a military education and a love for the trappings of army life, such as uniforms and parades, he was temperamentally ill-suited for the heavy responsibilities of an autocratic ruler. He was described as timid and often felt ill at ease during formal occasions, preferring the private company of his family to the demands of his subjects.

His approach to governance was defined by a rigid, almost childishly simple devotion to autocracy. He believed he was responsible to God alone and viewed any attempts by local assemblies, or zemstvos, to share in government as "senseless dreams." This uncompromising stance, combined with intensified police repression to meet popular unrest, set the stage for the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917. His foreign policy was similarly marked by naïveté; in July 1905, he famously met with German Emperor William II at Björkö to form an alliance, despite Russia's existing ties to Germany's enemy, France.

Internal instability was further exacerbated by the influence of his wife, Alexandra, and the mystic Grigori Rasputin. Nicholas often fell under Alexandra's sway, leading the imperial couple to seek advice from spiritualists and faith healers. He also relied on irresponsible favorites who provided him with a distorted, comforting view of Russian life, often ignoring the grim realities found in official reports. This cycle of indecision and isolation ultimately culminated in his abdication in 1917 and his execution by the Bolsheviks in July 1918 in Yekaterinburg.
