The Legend of Herakles - the Greatest Hero in Greek Mythology · 18:15 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: Herakles, the legendary demi-god and son of Zeus, spent his life battling divine interference. This overview examines his origins, his tragic descent into madness, and the grueling path to redemption through his twelve famous labors.

Born to the mortal Alcmene and the god Zeus, the hero was originally named Alcides. His parents later renamed him Herakles, which translates to 'Glory of Hera,' in a desperate bid to placate Zeus' wife. Despite this, Hera remained a constant antagonist, eventually driving the hero to a state of madness that led to the tragic killing of his wife, Megara, and their children.

To atone for these crimes, Herakles sought penance from his cousin Eurystheus in Mycenae. Eurystheus assigned him twelve monumental tasks, known as the twelve labors, which define his legacy as the greatest hero of Greek mythology.
