How a minibike accident and a shared studio shaped a platinum rock era
In short: In 2003, Hoobastank's second studio album, The Reason, was nearly derailed by a serious injury. Despite critical debates over their sound, the record became a massive commercial powerhouse, eventually selling over 2.3 million copies in the United's States alone.
The production of The Reason was marked by unexpected turbulence. While working with producer Howard Benson—known for his work with P.O.D. and Cold—the band faced a significant setback in August 2003. Guitarist Dan Estrin suffered a serious injury in a minibike accident, causing a month-long disruption to the recording process. By October, Estrin had recovered, allowing the band to embark on the Nokia Unwired Tour alongside the All-American Rejects and Ozomatli that November.
Critically, the album was a polarizing affair. AllMusic's Johnny Loftus praised the band's maturing musicianship, while Rolling Stone's Christian Hoard found the melodies promising despite some 'middling sentiment.' Entertainment Weekly's Jim Farber offered a sharper critique, comparing the band's sound to a less refined version of Incubus. Despite these mixed reviews, the album's commercial trajectory was undeniable. It reached number three on the US Billboard 200 and became the twenty-fourth best-selling album of 2004.
The album's success was driven by powerful singles like 'Out of Control,' which reached number nine on the U.S. modern rock chart. The title track, 'The Reason,' became a global phenomenon, hitting number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the U.S. and world modern rock charts. The tracks even found life in popular media, with 'Same Direction' featured in Madden NFL 2005 and 'Just One' appearing in Japanese beer commercials for Asahi Super Dry in 2007.
