How a television program once enslaved the entire human race
In short: In John Christopher's post-apocalyptic vision, humanity didn't fall to weapons, but to a broadcast. Through a hypnotic program called The Trippy Show, an alien race known as the Masters used mass media to bypass conventional warfare and install permanent mental implants in the population.
The conquest of Earth, as detailed in the prequel *When the Tripodas Came*, was not a traditional military invasion. Instead, the Masters utilized a psychological strategy: they broadcasted a hypnotic television program called The Trippy Show. This program induced a mania in viewers, eventually leading to the use of 'Caps'—implants designed to suppress individuality and free will. While the Masters considered capping humans even earlier than age 14 to prevent rebellion, they were biologically constrained; the procedure had to wait until the human braincase had finished growing.
Under this regime, human society regressed to a state reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Large-scale industry vanished, replaced by a pastoral existence of small villages, though rare modern artifacts like watches remained as status symbols. The Masters maintained control through massive, three-legged walking machines called Tripods. In the BBC television adaptation, the Masters' role was even more complex, depicted as being subject to higher-order energy beings called Cognoscs.
Resistance eventually emerged from the 'White Mountains,' a region free from Tripod control. The conflict involved high-stakes infiltration, where human athletes were selected via sporting contests to serve as slaves in the Masters' pressurized, high-gravity cities. The struggle concluded with a desperate campaign involving everything from alcohol-induced sedation to hot air balloon bombings, ultimately leading to the Masters' departure and a rapid rediscovery of human technological potential.
