In short: In a luxurious manor, a small group of players holds a deadly secret. They are the Traitors, and their mission is to eliminate the Faithful one by one. It is a psychological battle of wits where a single wrong vote can cost you a massive prize fund.

Based on the Dutch series De Verraders, the Australian version of The Traitors is a social deduction game played within a heritage manor. The contestants are divided into two groups: the Faithful, who seek to identify and banish the Traitros, and the Traitors, who are secretly selected by the host. The Traitors aim to eliminate the Faithful players through nocturnal 'murders' to claim the prize fund for themselves, which can reach up to A$250,000.

The game mechanics involve complex layers of protection and risk. While players compete in missions to add silver bars to the prize pot, they also vie for shields. In the first season, a shield offered protection from both murder and banishment, but by the second season, its power was reduced to immunity from murder only. The second season also introduced the Armoury, a hidden room where mission winners could potentially secure a secret shield.

The climax of the game, the 'Traitors' Dilemma,' mirrors the classic Prisoner's Dilemma. If the remaining Traitors reach the end, they must choose to 'Share' or 'Steal.' A unanimous decision to share splits the pot equally. However, if even one Traitor chooses to steal, they take the entire pot, leaving the 'Share' voters with nothing. If all Traitors choose to steal, no one wins any money.

After a period of uncertainty following its 2024 cancellation due to low viewership, the series is set for a revival. A third season, announced in September 2025, will feature a cast of reality television personalities and move production to Castle Claremont in Timaru, New Zealand. Comedian Gretel Killeen is set to replace the original host, Rodger Corser, for this upcoming 2026 edition.
