In short: In the reality game show The Traitors, social deduction meets high-stakes tension. A small group of secret saboteurs must eliminate their companions to claim a grand prize, while the remaining contestants must identify and banish them before the deception becomes absolute.

The franchise, originally debuting in 2021 as De Verraders on RTL 4 in the Netherlands, is built on a social deduction mechanic similar to games like Mafia or Among Us. Contestants are sequestered in historical settings, such as manors or castles, and divided into two distinct groups: the Faithfuls and the Traitors. While the Faithfuls work together to uncover the deception, only the Traitors possess the knowledge of who their fellow conspirators are.

The gameplay is defined by two primary methods of elimination. On most nights, the Traitors meet in secret to select a Faithful to 'murder,' removing them from the game immediately. The following day, the group discovers the loss when the victim fails to appear for breakfast. Alternatively, players face a 'Round Table' at the end of the day. Here, they discuss suspicions and cast private votes; the individual with the most votes is banished and must publicly reveal their true affiliation.

Strategic layers add complexity to the survival mechanics. Players may occasionally earn a shield during missions, which provides immunity from murder but does not protect them from a banishment vote. If the number of Traitors dwindles to just two, they may attempt to recruit a Faithful to their ranks. The ultimate stakes are decided at the final round table: if the remaining players are all Faithfuls, they split the prize fund, but if even one Traitor survives to the end, they claim the entire pot.

The format's popularity has led to diverse iterations, including celebrity versions and a specialized American version focused on former reality TV personalities. The phenomenon is even expanding into live theater, with a five-play cycle titled 'The Traitors: Acts of Betrayal' scheduled to premiere at London's Gillian Lynne Theatre in May 2027.
