How one political gamble in 69 CE destroyed four elite Roman legions forever

The Year of the Four Emperors Explained · 8:08 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: The Year of the Four Emperors was a period of intense civil war that saw four distinguished Roman legions meet an inglorious end. This video explores the fatal choice these soldiers made and why their legacy was erased from history.

In 69 CE, the Roman Empire descended into chaos as candidates vied for the throne. Four veteran legions—XV Primigenia, I Germanica, IIII Macedonica, and XVI Gallia—had previously served with distinction under leaders like Pompey and Octavian. However, their decision to back Vitellius against Vespasian proved to be a catastrophic miscalculation.

While the loyalty of the XV Primigenia remains a subject of historical debate, the other three legions explicitly supported Vitellius. Their defeat led to the total demise of all four units. Though the XV Primigenia was later reformed, the groups are now largely remembered as the dishonored and forgotten legions of Rome. Had their chosen candidate prevailed, these soldiers might have been celebrated for their valor rather than relegated to historical obscurity.
