How a Viennese punk rocker became the 'Idol Killer' of Japanese wrestling
In short: From the underground cellars of Vienna to the global stage of AEW, Thekla Kaischauri has built a career on subverting expectations. By rejecting the cheerful 'idol' archetype of Japanese wrestling, she has transformed from a local indie talent into one of the most feared villains in the industry.
Born in Vienna in 1993, Thekla Kaischauri’s path to the ring was far from traditional. A graduate with an MFA from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, her upbringing was defined by a diverse range of disciplines, including ballet, gymnastics, and playing the violin. As a teenager, she was immersed in the city's DIY punk scene, even forming a band called the Death Row Groupies. This artistic and aggressive background eventually merged with her discovery of professional wrestling at age 19, leading her to train in the 'basement dojo' of Vienna's underground scene.
Her wrestling persona, often called 'The Toxic Spider,' is a deliberate antithesis to the 'idol' culture prevalent in Japanese women's wrestling (joshi puroresu). While many female performers adopt cute or cheerful characters, Thekla utilizes an antagonistic, brusque style. This 'Idol Killer' persona was central to her time in the Stardom promotion, where she led the villainous H.A.T.E. stable with the explicit goal of eradicating idol culture from the scene. Her technical style, which blends fluid acrobatics with aggressive grappling and submissions, makes her a formidable 'gaijin' (foreigner) in the Japanese market.
Thekla's career trajectory has seen her move from the raw, unpolished matches in the Weberknecht—held on 5 cm thick mats in damp cellars—to major international promotions like All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Since joining AEW in 2025, she has achieved significant milestones, including her first world championship victory against Kris Statlander in February 2026. Whether performing as part of the 'Triangle of Madness' or as a solo force, her career remains defined by a commitment to psychological warfare and a refusal to conform to industry norms.
