From Olympic dreams to the ring: The rise of the Pirate Princess
In short: Kaori Housako, known globally as Kairi Sane, transitioned from a competitive yachting background to professional wrestling stardom. By blending athletic intensity with theatrical performance, she became a decorated champion in both Japan and the United States, leaving an indelible mark on the global wrestling landscape before her 2026 departure from WWE.
Born in Hikari, Japan, in 1988, Housako initially pursued a career in acting after graduating from Hosei University with a degree in Japanese literature. Her path shifted dramatically when a theater performance, where she portrayed a wrestling villain, caught the eye of Fuka, the general manager of World Wonder Ring Stardom. Captivated by the fusion of sport and performance, Housako began training in 2011, debuting as Kairi Hojo in 2012. Adopting a 'Pirate Princess' persona that drew from her background in competitive yachting, she rapidly ascended the ranks, securing multiple championships including the World of Stardom title and the 5Star Grand Prix.
In 2017, Housako signed with WWE, adopting the name Kairi Sane. Her tenure was marked by significant accolades, including winning the inaugural Mae Young Classic and the NXT Women's Championship in 2018. She later formed the Kabuki Warriors with Asuka, becoming a dominant force in the tag team division. Her career was characterized by a relentless work ethic, even as she navigated injuries, including multiple concussions, and periods of transition between international promotions. In 2022, she returned to Japan to compete for Stardom and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where she became the inaugural IWGP Women's Champion.
Beyond the ring, Housako has maintained a diverse professional life, including opening a gym in Kanagawa in 2022. Her impact on the industry was recognized as early as 2016, when Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter identified her as one of the best wrestlers in the world. After a second stint in WWE that saw her capture the Women's Tag Team Championship three times, she concluded her time with the company in April 2026. Her career remains a testament to the crossover potential between elite athletic training and the narrative demands of professional wrestling.
