From Schalke prodigy to European journeyman: the rising career of Thilo Kehrer
In short: A €37 million transfer, Champions League victories, and a path through Germany, France, England, and the Netherlands. Follow the defensive career of Thilo KeHD, a versatile player whose journey through Europe's elite clubs defines the modern professional era.
Born in Tübingen in 1996, Thilo Kehrer emerged from the Schalke 04 academy as a highly-regarded defender. His professional ascent was rapid; he made his Bundesliga debut in February 2016 against VfL Wolfsburg and quickly became a vital figure for the German side. A standout moment arrived in April 2017, when he scored an equalizer in the intense Revierderby against Borussia Dortmund.
Kehrer's defensive versatility—capable of playing as both a centre-back and a full-back—attracted global attention. In August 2018, Paris Saint-Germain secured his services in a massive €37 million transfer. During his tenure in France, Kehrer experienced both the highs of winning the Coupe de France and the physical tolls of the game, including an adductor injury in late 2020 that briefly sidelined him from competition.
His career has since been marked by significant moves across Europe's top leagues. After a £10.1 million move to West Ham United in August 2022, Kehrer transitioned to Ligue 1's Monaco. Following a successful loan period that saw Monaco secure Champions League qualification, the club exercised an option to purchase him for approximately £9.5 million in May 2024. Most recently, his journey led him to the Eredivisie, joining Ajax on loan for the 2026–27 season.
Beyond the pitch, Kehrer's identity is shaped by his German and Burundian heritage. He remains committed to social impact, supporting the organization Anstoß zur Hoffnung e.V., which provides aid to disadvantaged communities in his mother's homeland.
