From Swiss youth prodigy to Bundesliga striker: the journey of Cedric Itten
In short: A clinical finisher who rose through the ranks of FC Basel to conquer the Scottish Premiership. Discover how this Swiss international transitioned from a promising talent to a vital component of championship-winning squads across Europe, including an unbeaten league campaign and a high-profile move to the German Bundesliga.
Born on 27 December 1996, Cedric Itten’s professional trajectory began in the Swiss youth systems, moving from FC Black Stars Basel to BSC Old Boys before joining the prestigious FC Basel academy in 2007. His rise was rapid; by the 2013–14 season, he was competing in the UEFA Youth League. His professional breakthrough arrived during the 2015–16 season under head coach Urs Fischer, a campaign that saw him secure a Swiss Super League championship title and contribute to Basel's 19th total championship.
Itten's career has been defined by strategic moves and impactful loan spells. After periods at FC Luzern and St. Gallen—where the latter eventually exercised an option to purchase him in June 2018—he made a high-profile move to the Scottish club Rangers in August 2020 for a reported £2.7 million. In Scotland, he played a role in a historic squad that ended Celtic's decade of dominance, contributing to an unbeaten league campaign during the 2020–2021 season.
Beyond club success, Itten has been a reliable figure for the Switzerland national team since his debut in November 2019, where he scored the winning goal against Georgia. His recent years have seen him navigate the German leagues, with stints at Greuther Fürth and Fortuna Düsseldorf, eventually signing with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in June 2026. His individual accolades, including being named to the Swiss Super League Team of the Year in 2019–20 and 2022–23, underscore his enduring presence in European football.
