From lingerie battles to global titles: the evolution of a wrestling crown

In short: Before it was a world championship, women's competition in TNA began with a lingerie battle royal. The journey from that 2002 debut to the current Knockouts World Championship reflects nearly two decades of branding shifts, design overhauls, and record-breaking reigns.

The lineage of women's wrestling in TNA predates the current championship by several years. The company's first female accomplishment was announced on June 19, 2002, as the 'Miss TNA' Crown. This title was determined in a lingerie battle royal featuring nine participants, including Alexis Laree and Taylor Vaughn, who ultimately won the crown. It wasn't until October 14, 2007, that the current Knockouts World Championship debuted at the Bound for Glory pay-per-view.

The championship has undergone significant identity shifts to match corporate branding. Originally introduced in 2007 as the TNA Women's Championship, it was renamed the TNA Women's Knockout Championship in 2008 before settling on its current name in 2010. The physical belt has seen four distinct designs since its inception.

These range from a white leather strap with a crown motif in 2007 to various iterations involving black straps, blue accents, and even a temporary unification with the Global Force Wrestling (GFW) Women's Championship. Statistically, the title has been held by 34 different champions across 73 reigns as of October 12, 2026. The history is bookended by extremes: Gail Kim holds the record for the most reigns with seven, while also holding the record for the shortest reign at just 18 hours. Conversely, Taya Valkyrie holds the record for the longest reign at 377 days. The current champion, Indi Hartwell, secured her first title on October 11, 2026, by defeating Xia Brookside.
