The defender who scored the goal that ended a 66-year drought
In short: Few players can claim to have conquered the Champions League, the Premier League, and La Liga. But for Toby Alderweireld, the ultimate triumph was a 94th-minute strike that secured his hometown club's first league title in over six decades.
A journey through the elite tiers of European football, Toby Alderweireld’s career was defined by defensive reliability and unexpected offensive flair. After rising through the Ajax academy and winning three consecutive Eredivisie titles, the Belgian centre-back moved to Atlético Madrid in 2013. There, he experienced the highs of winning La Liga and the heartbreak of the 2014 Champions League final, where he played the final seven minutes of extra time.
His tenure in England saw him become a cornerstone of Tottenham Hotspur's defense. During the 2015–16 season, he was named to the PFA Team of the Year, part of a defensive unit that conceded only 25 goals in 34 Premier League matches. He also helped set a club record in 2016–17, with Tottenham conceding just 26 goals in a single Premier League campaign—the best defensive record in the club's history.
On the international stage, Alderweireld was a mainstay for Belgium, earning 127 caps between 2009 and 2023. He represented his nation at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups, earning a bronze medal in 2018. However, his most poetic moment came in June 2023 with Royal Antwerp. In a dramatic final matchday, his late goal secured a 2–2 draw against Genk, clinching the Belgian Pro League title and ending a 66-year championship drought for the Antwerp side.
After stints in Qatar with Al-Duhail, Alderweireld announced his retirement from professional football in late 2024, set to conclude his career in July 2025. His career, marked by both clinical defending and spectacular long-range strikes, remains a testament to a player who thrived in the highest-pressure moments of the sport.
